Everybody is doing it! But is it working?

Starbucks has just launched, Cisco is doing it and Dell has been doing it for over a year. I'm talking about the open innovation initiatives where organizations invites the general public to give their ideas and input on how to improve their offerings. The general idea is of course both simple and brilliant but is it working? If you go to the different sites you find that many of the suggestions are pretty good but also really, really obvious. I'm looking forward to reports on this and if its a true source for great ideas or just a way of getting market feedback and some nice PR.
