Knowledge Creation - in the City or in the Forest?

Just back from a EMBA programme week around the Six Domains of leadership with Allan Lind and Sim Sitkin at Duke University I just found myself thinking: is knowledge best created in private (like in a camp in the middle of a forest) or in a busy intersection (like campuses that are melted into a city sourrounding)? Duke is a great place, but is knowledge and creativity really created when it is mandatory too stay in those dorms in the middle of nowhere for the three first years of study? I am doubtful that that is the way to new ideas, it smells more like control of ideas.
